The Story

Shiny, tough, and versatile shrub for your landscape

The glossy privet bush is known for its vibrant, shining foliage that brings a lush green presence to any yard. Its glossy leaves stand out, adding a touch of elegance, while its drought-tolerant nature makes it ideal for those looking for low-maintenance options. This resilient shrub not only excels in harsh conditions but also works beautifully as a screening plant, creating privacy without sacrificing beauty.

In late spring to early summer, the glossy privet showcases small, creamy white flowers that fill the air with a strong, pungent fragrance. While the aroma can be off-putting to some, it attracts various pollinators, creating a lively environment in your garden. Additionally, its drupes are a feast for birds, enhancing wildlife activity and making this shrub a lovely addition beyond just aesthetics.

Caution: The leaves and berries of Glossy Privet are toxic if ingested by humans, dogs, cats, horses, and livestock. Plant with care in areas accessible to children, pets, and grazing animals.

Also, Glossy Privet can spread aggressively and become weedy throughout the Southeast. It is considered invasive in California, Florida, Texas, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, and Maryland. Customers in these states should consider alternative plant options. Please contact Customer Support for recommended substitutes appropriate for your area.

Planting & Care

1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. This shrub thrives in well-drained, alkaline soil and full sun to partial shade. Space them appropriately to allow for growth. Dig a hole twice the size of the rootball and as deep. Backfill with native soil and spread a 3” layer of mulch about 3 feet around the shrub. Water deeply after planting.

2. Watering: Water deeply 2–3 times a week during the first growing season. Water 1–2 times a week the second growing season. Once established, it is quite drought-tolerant, requiring less frequent watering in dry conditions.

3. Pruning: Glossy privet tolerates severe pruning, making it easy to shape and maintain. Prune in late winter or early spring. Spring flowers appear on new growth.

4. Fertilizing: Fertilizer is not usually needed on privets because of their fast and often weedy growth.
